Prepare a small test
List installed plugins, their purpose, last update and whether each is active. Take a recoverable site backup before changing a production WordPress installation.
Work through the task
The Orphan Watch page describes checks for abandoned, closed and outdated plugins without an account or API key. Run a scan, review its findings and confirm each risk against the plugin's current authoritative listing.
Check the result
Test a replacement on staging, check affected pages and forms, then update or remove one plugin at a time. Document why a plugin was retained despite a warning.
Current limits
A maintenance signal is not proof of a vulnerability, and the registry has no verified public plugin distribution channel. Follow WordPress security advisories for actual exposure.
