Rename business files with a reversible plan

Preview a batch rename and keep an undo manifest outside the folder.

Bulk renaming can save time, but a typo in a rule can hide dozens of invoices or scans. Review the exact proposed filenames before any move.

Prepare your input

Copy a small representative folder first. Choose either a CSV with old and new names or the Filename rules tab, which offers prefix, suffix, literal replacement and optional numbered prefix. The tool handles files directly in one folder, not subfolders.

Work through the task

Select files explicitly in Document Batch Renamer and review the table. Numbering follows alphabetical filename order and preserves the final extension. Changing a setting invalidates the preview, so generate it again. The app checks file hashes before applying moves. Save the undo manifest outside the renamed folder. Undo displays the target folder and proposed reversal for review.

Example to try

Try a three-file folder: invoice-A.pdf, invoice-B.pdf and receipt.pdf. Preview a numbered prefix and check the alphabetical order before Apply. Put the undo manifest outside that folder; otherwise the manifest itself becomes part of the next batch. If someone edits a renamed PDF, restore from backup rather than expecting Undo to overwrite changed content.

Check the result

After applying, count files, open a few renamed documents and retain the manifest until the new names have been accepted. Undo refuses files changed since the operation; do not edit them first if you expect to reverse it.

Know the current limits

There is no OCR, nested-folder processing, swaps, case-only renames or unattended execution. Avoid other processes writing to the folder during the operation.
